Community Service Ideas: Collaborative Document

If you want to keep track of or maintain accountability for individual student community service hours:
Create a verification of service form and distribute to students before they perform service. Include: student name, event, authorized adult signature, date, number of hours. Etc. You may need to verify adult signatures.

It is never a bad idea to contact your local newspaper or TV new channel to promote and publicize your event.
IDEAS (gathered from other advisers at previous adviser conferences):
- Adopt a bus bench
- Adopt a family in need (e.g. Thanksgiving baskets)
- Adopt a museum display
- Adopt a new student to help ease their transition
- Adopt a grandparent or preschool or bulletin board
- Adopt a highway (every quarter)
- Animal literacy: socialization at the animal shelter (read to dogs)
- Answer letters to Santa
- ASPCA (e.g. collecting blankets for animal shelters, etc.)
- Assist at Open House or Back to School night
- Assist with existing tutoring programs
- Assist during textbook distribution
- Bicycle repairs
- Box tops for elementary schools (count/collect)
- Breast Cancer awareness
- Candy stripers
- Celebrate local police or firefighters and host a dinner for them
- City parade volunteers
- Christmas caroling
- Church pantry volunteers
- Collect coats or blankets for the homeless
- Collect e-waste and donate items for a cause
- Collect new or gently used books for local shelters or a school in need
- Collect shoes or tee-shirts/clothes for those in need (e.g. homeless students)
- Collect something every month
- Contact a chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation for opportunities to help
- Contact Operation Gratitude and coordinate a project
- Contact Ronald McDonald house and organize a collection
- Blankets of Love
- Project Angel Tree
- Partner with Kiwanis, Lions, etc.
- Host Valentine’s dance at convalescent hospital
- Curb address painting for seniors
- Decorate doors at senior centers
- Disaster relief collections
- Errands for the elderly
- Computer lessons for the elderly
- Check online community volunteer opportunities
- Graduation volunteers: decoration, programs, etc.

Fundraisers that can be carried out online or in person!
- Candy Sales
- See’s Candies has a very nice online fundraising program with no minimums. Valentine’s Day is a coming up and would be a great time for this easy to do fundraiser. https://fundraising.sees.com/
- Seasonal Sales:
- Valentine grams
- Valentine carnations (roses)
- Candy Cane grams
- “Opportunity drawings” (pizza, donated prizes)
- Sponsor teacher vs. student competition
- Create and sell cookbooks
- Partner with a restaurant for a virtual fundraising event
- Book covers with school emblem/logo – take orders online
- Sell singing “telegrams”. Ask for email address of recipients. Use Zoom to deliver the musical messages.
- Virtual concert. Make use of the talent of your chapter members to create an online experience and sell tickets to it.
- Virtual talent show. Ask supporters to submit their virtual talent show performances video. The videos can be compiled for viewers to vote on their favorite. Charge an entry fee. Consider offering several prizes, including for best overall, most humorous, most talented child, etc. to boost participation.
- 24-hour campaign. Get in on GivingTuesday – December 1, 2020
Send emails to potential supporters requesting donations on December 1st, or any date you choose.

- Sell hot chocolate on winter mornings
- Make and sell candy leis for graduation (YouTube demonstrations)

OTHER IDEAS TO RAISE FUNDS (For purchasing chapter awards, student recognition supplies)
- Contact local merchants to make a presentation seeking their sponsorship of donation.
- Contact the local Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Rotary Clubs, to seek their support or donation. In turn, perform community service for their events.
- If permissible, seek donations from students or parents or school staff.
Dues are Due on November 1st – Late Fees Waived
Dues are due no later than November 1, 2020.
- For this 2020-2021 year late fees will not be imposed for dues paid by June 30, 2021.
Late payment of dues may affect chapter “good standing” for award nominations.
Please note: To be in “good standing” for Seymour Award nominations, chapter dues must be paid for 2020-2021 prior to nominating students for the Seymour award.
