Session Guide

#1 How to Communicate with Adults
College Park High School CSF officers will be giving a presentation on how to lay a foundation when it comes to talking with adults. The presentation will consist of an introduction, various tips and misconceptions, and strive to build confidence in students of all ages. #3 One Book, One Community, Promoting Literacy Across the County
CSF and CJSF students are hosting a Community Read in Plumas County, CA to connect all ages and backgrounds around one book – Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive and American Wildfire – as a part of the Far North Literacy grant to facilitate “learning and healing through the power of literacy”. We would like to show how we selected the book title, marketed the event, recruited community partners, and the plan for the culminating event – A Book Talk hosted by CSF/CJSF students about the text, its impact on ourselves, and the broader connections we can make to our community and world!

#4 Using UN SDGs to Meet Local Needs
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals provide a unique framework to address the needs of local, regional, national, and international communities for a better, safer, happier, and more equitable world! We would like to show other schools how we used this global goal setting tool to find out more about our own communities needs and take action toward improving this healthy indicator. For Portola Jr./Sr. High School, that looks like Goal 2: Zero Hunger! CJSF students created a survey, an education campaign, and designed/ supported two community events that address food insecurity in Portola, CA with the help of community partners and teachers.

#5 Creating A Local Ecosystem Through Service
Our school’s homework club is a place for students who require help with their schoolwork. Our CJSF members have stepped up to make this a reliable way for students to get the support they need. CJSF members register to volunteer at homework club. Whoever needs help comes to the homework club and gets support from our members. This creates an interaction where students have the comfort of getting support from their peers. This can also lead to the pairing of students who consistently need help with those who work well with them. Students truly get a chance to interact with peers and get support, all while forming new relationships. This has led to many struggling students improving not only grades, but the relationship they foster with work and the way they approach it. All of these benefits are due to the connection formed between students on our campus, between those who need support, and those who want to help.
