2023-2024 MICHELSON AWARD ESSAY CONTEST RECIPIENT – Yuan Cheng

Congratulations to Yuan Cheng, the 2023-2024 recipient of the Michelson Memorial Award for her essay about serving 600 meals since 2021 at The Union Rescue Mission in DTLA and as a result created with other students a slide presentation to raise awareness and funds for URM.

Yuan is a student at Marlborogh School, Chapter 197sc, Adviser Cynthia Dominguez.

Yuan’s essay captivates the reader from the first sentence. “The first thing I see about the people in line is always their hands. There are large hands, enveloped in wrinkles and laid open in front of me like books. There are small ones, fluttering restlessly about their young owners’ sides like birds waiting to fly.”

Comments from the readers included:

  • “Fantastic opening which really grabs the reader. This student really seemed to have a strong impact on an immediate problem in their local community.”
  • “Beautiful writing… making a difference!”
  • “Incredibly creative and captivated me. The writer covered all of the requirements (and) did a spectacular job at explaining the relevance and impact of the community service experience.”

Her service in the community and lovely writing makes Yuan and her essay a winner.

Using UN SDGs to Meet Local Needs

Using UN SDGs to Meet Local Needs
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals provide a unique framework to address the needs of local, regional, national, and international communities for a better, safer, happier, and more equitable world! We would like to show other schools how we used this global goal setting tool to find out more about our own communities needs and take action toward improving this healthy indicator. For Portola Jr./Sr. High School, that looks like Goal 2: Zero Hunger! CJSF students created a survey, an education campaign, and designed/ supported two community events that address food insecurity in Portola, CA with the help of community partners and teachers.

How to Communicate with Adults

How to Communicate with Adults
College Park High School CSF officers will be giving a presentation on how to lay a foundation when it comes to talking with adults. The presentation will consist of an introduction, various tips and misconceptions, and strive to build confidence in students of all ages. Personal stories and discussion will also be included as a way to spark any questions that CSF members may have. We will go over the significance of talking with adults and reassure any nervousness that comes with discussing a certain topic with adults.
